What I Tried First (The Standard Playbook)
Dentist #1: The standard night guard
Like most people, I got my first night guard from a dentist. It was a standard boil-and-bite style, followed later by a custom-fitted acrylic guard. The acrylic guard fit better and protected my enamel, which is something — but my morning jaw soreness didn't improve meaningfully, and I found I was actually clenching harder with the guard in than without it.

Each one failed. Several made things worse.
What I learned from going through so many dentists so quickly: the TMJ world is remarkably lacking in consensus. These experts contradicted each other completely. That absence of consensus was a signal — nobody actually knew the mechanism. They were all guessing, just with expensive equipment and confident terminology.
Botox consideration
Around 2016, I seriously considered masseter Botox. The appeal was obvious: reduce the muscle's force-generating capacity, stop the damage, get some relief. I spent time researching it and talking to clinicians who offered it.
I ultimately decided against it for a reason that took me a while to articulate: Botox addresses the muscle's output without addressing why the muscle was activated in the first place.
